Every year for January is celebrated the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, a party that while in other countries is not much played in Russia and is a classic popular celebration.
This festival dates from the same introduction of Christianity in Russia, at the end of the first millennium, and if now is known worldwide for being a time when people are immersed under the near-freezing water between the ice, in their origins celebrated differently.
For those years, the night of January 18 holes opened in a cross on the ice of rivers and lakes, which were called Jordanians in honor of the Jordan River where Jesus was baptized. When the procession passed by these Jordanians church, the priest stopped and plunged the cross three times while making a prayer. After that, water was blessed these Jordanes.
Over time some people began to plunge into the icy water for part of the fun it contained. Now it is a popular tradition that not only the Russians and Orthodox Christians can participate.
