The Tretyakov Gallery is considered the main depository of Russian fine arts: his collection includes objects dating from the eleventh century to the twentieth. It was founded by the Moscow merchant Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov. In the mid-1850s Tretyakov began to form his collection of fine arts. In 1867 he exhibited to the public in 1892 and donated it to the city of Moscow at that time had 1276 paintings, 15 sculptures and a collection of Russian icons. In 1918 the gallery was proclaimed state ownership of the Russian Soviet Republic.
