Trains in Russia

Types of trains in Russia

In this article we explain about trains, airplane and train stations in Moscow and St. Petersburg, all you need to know to travel between cities.

There are some types of trains in Russia. These are:

Train closeness – “Elektrichka” (“Электричка”)

Normally in the short train distania all cars have seats. They are heated in winter, but in summer without air conditioning. In the spring and summer better not ride electichka weekend Saturday morning to the outskirts and Sunday evening to Moscow, because at that time many Russians traveling to or from their cottages (called dacha).

Long distance train (“Поезд”)

These trains are long-distance trains. They are operating throughout Russia between cities. Usually the trains go long distances lasting six hours or more. There are many night routes that have cars beds. The most popular routes for tourists are made on the train from Moscow to St. Petersburg or Nizhniy Novgorod, Vologda, Kazan, Petrozavodsk (Karelia), Krasnoyarsk, Vladivostok (transsiberiano).

Train two floors

It is a kind of modern train is similar to the normal train, but it has two plants, so the cost of ticket is cheaper, sometimes half the price.

High-speed train, Sapsan (“Сапсан”), Lastochka (“Ласточка”) or other

High-speed trains now circulating (the most popular directions) between Moscow and St. Petersburg (the famous Sapsan) and between Moscow and Nizhniy Novgorod (Strij “Стриж” and Lastochka), St. Petersburg and Helsinki (Allegro “Аллегро” train).

Car categories

There are some types of cars and some classes. They have different costs and comfort.

СВ (SV) is the 1st First Class Car

It depends on the train (high speed train seats or long distance) this class may vary. Usually in long-distance trains in first class there are only two beds.

Купе (Kupe) is the 2nd second chase car class

The behavior of this kind usually has 4 beds (two downstairs and two upstairs) with linen and towel, table, mirror and door.

Плацкарт (Platskart) is the 3rd Third Class Car

This class compartments have doors in each apartment there are 4 beds (two downstairs and two upstairs), plus two beds in hallway (one downstairs and one upstairs). Above the beds are not very comfortable, there is very little space so it can not sit there. Magazines have nothing, no doors or mirrors. But beds have linen and towel included in the cost.

Сидячий (Sidiachiy) is car seats

It is the class seats. In the high-speed trains they are very comfortable but in the long-distance trains that take on the road more than 7 hours are bad and uncomfortable. We recommend traveling in this class only short distances (up to 5 hours) and never buy this kind for long distances.

Общий (Obshiy)

Общий (Obshiy) is a very bad kind of car, like inside the trains (has banks in), can be used for short-distance travel, but do not recommend choosing this class for long distances (more than 4 hours ).

Where to buy tickets on long distance trains

There are some options to buy tickets for trains in Russia. All tickets 45 days before start selling. I advise buying more soon as possible because at first they are cheaper (especially between 45 and 30 days earlier) and no tickets. For example in the summer it is very difficult to buy tickets on trains running between Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Vokzal Leningradsky railway station in Moscow

From this railway station for trains to St. Petersburg and north of Russia – Murmansk, Petrozavodsk, Karelia. The station is on the square in Treh vokzalov Komsomolskaya subway station. Vokzal The building was built in 1849 by Ton and Zheliazevich. This is the oldest vokzal in Moscow. In this vokzal airline called Moskva oktiabrskaia because this line is called the road and the station Oktiabrskaya before had the name vokzal Oktiabrskiy.

Station (Vokzal) station in St. Petersburg

In St. Petersburg there are some vokzales but in this article we talk only about the most important for tourists who go to Moscow or St. Petersburg backwards.

Moskovsky vokzal

Here come the most trains from Moscow, including Sapsan. In this vokzal airline called San Petrburg Glav. It is in the city center near the street Nevsky prospect and Ploshad Vosstaniya subway. It was built in 1847 year. It seemed a little Leningradskiy vokzal in Moscow.

To buy the ticket online or otherwise is mecesario give your passport details: Name, date of birth, country of origin, place of birth, passport number, passport date when it ends.

  1. Buy online
You can compare train tickets online with some sites offering these online services.
We let one of the pages you can use to buy these tickets http://www.russianrail.com/
  2. Buy our tourism business in Russia
We recommend buying railway tickets in our company Guarus. In this case the bill may be more economical and will not need to worry about anything, the company buys the tickets.
  3. Buy train station
The best method to use only if you come to Moscow and occasionally decedia go to a city and not have internet. So you should go to one of the major train stations (vokzal) and go to the box. But there is a serious problem – the cashiers usually speak neither English nor Spanish, Russian alone, plus there can be pretty big queue. Council will not use this method.

Understanding your bill

Sometimes it can be difficult to understand your ticket on the train because some train stations in Russia on tickets often called different, not their real names. For example in the train ticket Moscow – St. Petersburg train station in Moscow from where the train and the train arrives called Vokzal Leningradskiy, but the ticket is called Moskva Oktiabrskaia. The train station in St. Petersburg called Moskovskiy Vokzal but ticket is called Sankt-Peterburg Glavny.

The type of car is usually in Russian, for example “coupe” is called “купе”. The bed eg “нижнее” means “down”, “верхнее” “up”.
